Adding a floor to a kindergarten while it remains open, without damaging the rooms below? No problem! TS3 solved this tricky challenge. The result is impressive.

The Project

The existing kindergarten was expanded to increase capacity. The winning design by the architectural firm Matthias Glutz was selected for its sustainable construction methods and innovative approaches. The existing structural framework was utilized in specific areas. Thanks to TS3, the ceiling and roof structure made of cross-laminated timber could be designed and constructed as a skeleton structure. The additional cantilever at the rear of the building was also elegantly implemented.

Construction Method

The ground floor remained intact; only the entrance area was redesigned. The existing hipped roof was dismantled. The ceiling above it and the roof were constructed using TS3 technology. The interior and exterior walls were also built using timber construction. On the exterior, the building is enclosed by a rear-ventilated wooden facade. The timber construction took only 3 days. This ensured that the existing ground floor was protected from the elements without any issues.

The Challenges

The CLT panels for the addition could not be supported during the construction phase due to the existing rooms below. The individual panels were laid out next to the building in the parking lot and pre-assembled using TS3 technology. Finally, the elements—measuring up to 100 m² and weighing 8 tons—were safely moved into place with millimeter precision using a mobile crane.

Construction data

  • Number of floors: 1
  • Gross floor area: 350 m²
  • Cross-laminated timber: 178 m³
  • TS3 technology: 265 running meters of joints
