In Switzerland and Canada, no approval is required for the construction of TS3 projects. In Europe, North America and other countries, approval is necessary. We are working on the approval for the EU in cooperation with the Materialprüfungsanstalt Universität Stuttgart and it should be available soon. Until the approval is available, construction projects can be built with approval on a case-by-case basis.

With TS3, column-plate structures can be designed as known from steel-concrete buildings. The floor slabs consist of cross-laminated timber panels, which are joined together with TS3 joints. This creates large areas of wood. The column grid can be selected up to 8x8 meters. The columns can be made of wood or any other building material. The required thickness of the floor slabs is determined by the column grid and the given live loads. Cross-laminated timber panels support in two axes, thanks to TS3 technology, large areas of wood result. Thus, the design of a TS3 project is similar to a column-and-slab structure with reinforced concrete. Designing a TS3 building project requires a licensed TS3 wood structural engineer. The TS3 technology is available to licensed companies worldwide. The license model is explained here. A TS3 build project requires the following licensed partners:

• TS3 cross-laminated timber manufacturer (list)
• TS3 timber construction engineer for the design of the construction project (list)
• TS3 application engineer for the joint grouting on the construction site
• Manufacturer of the TS3 pretreatment and casting resin is Henkel 

The TS3 technology is protected by various European and American patents. The owner of the patents is TS3 AG. The TS3 technology is available to licensed companies worldwide. To obtain a license, at least two people from the company must be trained and certified. One person receives a certificate after participating in the TS3 training. The training courses are tailored to the different target groups and are offered as e-learning courses. Find out more about the training here.

Quality assurance on the construction site is central, because TS3 joints are responsible for the structural safety of buildings. Quality assurance is part of the training for application engineers. Find out more about the training here. For joint grouting, there must be a minimum temperature of 17°C in the building. If the temperature falls below this, winter construction measures must be taken.

The TS3 construction method is comparable in cost to reinforced concrete projects. In general, timber buildings today are no longer more expensive than comparable solid construction methods. The cost of a TS3 flat slab can be most easily estimated using the formula: CLT thickness × CHF 1 (or EUR) per linear metre of connection.
Example calculation: CLT 200 mm; 200 × CHF 1 = CHF 200 per lm.
